This is a painting of Chinese Olympic synchronised divers Cao Yuan and Chen Aisen. Most of my paintings capture a person in a moment in time, i.e a snapshot, but they have a passive stillness to them. However, for this painting I wanted to focus on and capture movement, and with it, the next moment, the movement forward in time. I wanted the viewer to be able to feel the rotation and fall of the divers just by looking at the painting.
Whether I was fully successful or not, I’m unsure, but I very much enjoyed stepping outside of my comfort zone to work with movement, making marks on the canvas in places I usually wouldn’t.
