Keith Maiden - Artist Notes
Themes: Pandemic & Covid-19
Captain Boris of a rudderless ship navigating the good ship Covid through unprecedented times. This piece is neither against Boris or on his side. It’s an artists view of his handling of the pandemic. He’s blindfolded steering a country out of the pandemic, he’s being guided by the science (Maurice the blind mouse) indicating blind leading the blind. He has body art on his chest - damned it I do, damned if I don’t. He has body art on his left shoulder of the United Kingdom, suggesting he has the weight of a nation on his shoulders. He has red on the palm of his hands indicating ‘blood on his hands’.
One of the handles has been replaced with a lightbulb, suggesting the lights on but nobody’s home, the wire within the bulb spells the word ‘clown’. There are numerals on the helm 127,136 this is the amount of people who had died from Covid under Boris’s watch at the time the painting was completed. Words at the bottom of the painting ‘devil and the deep blue sea’ meaning he can never win.
