Makenzy Beard, a fifteen year old student of Bishopston Comprehensive School in Swansea, took to painting during lockdown.
An avid sports player, Makenzy represents Wales in under 16's hockey. Unable to take part in her favourite sport during lockdown, Makenzy was 'looking for something different to do' and so tried her hand at painting in her mothers studio. Her most recent portrait, titled 'Bernard Davies' is of Makenzy's grandfather. Since posting, the piece has received international acclaim, with an incredible response across social media. The fantastically lifelike portrait comes after her previous portrait 'John Tucker' was chosen to be exhibited as part of the prestigious Royal Academy Young Artist's Summer Show in London. The portrait of a local farmer, features John in a black hat and hi-vis jacket. Upon sharing the painting, many viewers across social media commented on the incredible detail and life like quality of the painting. With one viewer commenting 'we may be experiencing the emergence of Wales' greatest living artist'.
A family that has travelled the globe, Makenzy's portraits are not just of friends and family. Her piece 'Raft Boy' features a young boy in the water from an image she took while travelling the Philippines. The portrait gained hundreds of positive comments from viewers, with many astonished that the piece was indeed a painting and not a photograph.
