A self taught artist, Mulligan was a 2012 finalist for the BP Portrait award and subsequently had his work exhibited at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery in London. Toby Mulligan’s career has taken on a new direction following this recognition with his work sought after across the globe.
Toby Mulligan’s work is spontaneous and highly intuitive, often beginning a painting with no planning or sketching of ideas and simply letting the moment take him. His focus is often the nude female form, and while using a broad range of models, Mulligan believes that the best artwork comes from striking a connection with the subject and it’s because of this that he often prefers to paint from life rather than photographic reference.
